The world's largest passive optical network combined 13,000 workstations

Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia National Laboratories), dealing mainly with nuclear weapons and the related conversion technologies, have the world's largest passive optical network. Network deployment which began in 2009, currently brings together 13,000 workstations in 256 buildings. Relevant supplier of network equipment, which replaced the network based on copper, was the company Tellabs.
For five years, technology Tellabs can save $ 20 million
The transition to a passive optical network, according to estimates Tellabs, allow American scientists save about $ 20 million for five years of operation of the network since it was fully operational.
Allegedly, the total cost of ownership of passive optical networks in the case of networks of 500 or more computers, 70% of the total cost of ownership of the network based on copper cables. Its power consumption is 80% of the energy networks based on copper cables, and space requirements for the placement - 90% of the network based on copper cables.
