Market of hard disk drives in the final quarter of last year declined to statistics gathered by analysts IHS iSuppli. Hope producers on traditional seasonal rise in demand for HDD, accompanied by an increase in PC sales in this period did not materialize. The reason is lack of interest of buyers to desktops and laptops against the growing popularity of tablets and smartphones.
In just the last three months of 2012 was 135.8 million drives shipped, which is 2.4% less than the volume of deliveries in the third quarter, equal to 139.2 million shares. In value terms, the market declined even more pronounced - from 8.7 billion to 8.4 billion, or 3.4%.
Thin and light laptops, which have been associated with specific hopes for the revival of the PC market, have failed in their task. They have limited demand.
However, the hard drive is attractive because of the low unit cost of storage.
The largest supplier of HDD in the fourth quarter of 2012 is the company WD, leading both the number of drives shipped, and on the income earned. This manufacturer shipped 59.2 million drives, receiving $ 3.8 billion.
In second place - Seagate with indicators of 57.6 million drives, and $ 3.7 billion.
Closes the three company Toshiba, whose performance in the fourth quarter of 2012 amounted to 18.4 million drives and 0.92 billion.
