Despite the rapid growth of cellular networks 4G (LTE), they are still not widely available. The leaders in the promotion of new generation technologies are the U.S. and Asia. Meanwhile, Europeans are eager not just to catch up, but also to seize leadership in this area. This is evidenced by the decision of the European Commission to provide funding for research aimed at creating networks 5G.
The grant amount is small - 50 million euros, but then it still goes on the initial stage of the work. The EU hopes that the reality of the network will be 5G 2020.
About 16 million of this amount will receive an alliance METIS, led by Ericsson. Alliance members hope to create a network of 10-100 times greater than today in capacity by 10-100 times greater than their speed, and characterized by a delay of 5 times smaller.
Development, more or less related to the networking 5G, are subjects of other European research projects, such as 5GNOW, iJOIN, TROPIC, Mobile Cloud Networking, COMBO, MOTO and PHYLAWS.
